Coach Hill
Steep road climbing east from The Square to the A27, with period properties near the bottom and modern housing higher up.
Coach Hill is the road that rises steeply eastward from The Square towards the A27 and Fareham. It takes its name from the coaching route that historically connected Titchfield to the main east-west road along the south coast. The hill is one of the more noticeable gradients in an otherwise gently undulating landscape, and it gives the eastern approach to the village a distinct character. Properties along Coach Hill include a mix of older houses near the bottom and more modern development higher up. The junction at the top of Coach Hill meets the A27 Southampton Hill, which carries traffic between Fareham and the west. Coach Hill also connects to Fishers Hill and the roads leading towards Catisfield. The lower part of Coach Hill, near The Square, has some attractive period properties that form part of the village conservation area. The steepness of the hill means that views open up as you climb, with glimpses back over the village rooftops and across to the Meon valley. For most residents, Coach Hill is the route into and out of the village when heading east towards Fareham town centre. The A27 junction can be busy at peak times, but the hill itself carries only local traffic. The eastern side of the village, accessed via Coach Hill, tends to be slightly less visited by casual visitors than the abbey side to the north, giving it a quieter residential character.
