Commuting from Titchfield

Getting to work from the village

Titchfield's position in the Fareham borough, between Portsmouth and Southampton and close to the M27 motorway, makes it a practical base for commuters working in either city or in the business parks and employment centres along the south Hampshire corridor.

By car, Fareham is a few minutes' drive via the A27 or Coach Hill. The M27, accessed via junction 9 at Segensworth, provides the main motorway route. Portsmouth is approximately twenty minutes east along the M27, and Southampton is approximately twenty-five minutes west, though these times increase significantly during peak hours when the motorway and its junctions are heavily congested. The M27 between junctions 7 and 12 is one of the busiest stretches of motorway in Hampshire, and delays are common.

By train, Fareham station provides services to London Waterloo, Portsmouth, and Southampton. The commute to London takes approximately one hour and forty minutes. The commute to Portsmouth by train is fifteen to twenty minutes, and to Southampton twenty to twenty-five minutes. The station car park fills early, so many commuters arrive before seven o'clock or arrange alternative transport to the station.

Segensworth business parks, immediately north of the village, provide local employment for some residents, with a short commute by car or even on foot. Fareham town centre is also within easy reach for those working in the town.

The commuting pattern from Titchfield is typical of south Hampshire villages: most working adults commute by car, a minority use the train for longer journeys to London or along the coast, and a small number cycle or use the bus. The village's residential character is shaped by this commuting function, with many houses quiet during the working day and the village coming to life in the evenings and at weekends.
