South Street
Street guide, Titchfield
South Street is the principal street of Titchfield village, running south from The Square towards St Peter's Church. It is unusually wide for a village street, a legacy of Titchfield's former status as a market town where the street served as the market place. The buildings along South Street form one of the finest collections of vernacular architecture in Hampshire. Timber-framed houses from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries sit alongside Georgian and Victorian frontages, creating a varied but harmonious streetscape. Several of the buildings are listed. The street retains a working butcher's shop and other small businesses, which help maintain its character as a living village street rather than a museum piece. St Peter's Church at the southern end provides an architectural anchor. The street is within the Titchfield conservation area, and changes to building exteriors are carefully controlled.
